Background and Experience:
Kelly’s previous working experience included working as a senior psychologist at the Department of Psychological Medicine in the National University Hospital (NUH) providing psychological assessments and intervention with children and adolescents with mental health issues such as ADHD, ASD, Anxiety, OCD, Depression. She has received the Academic Medicine Development Award from NUH for further training in providing psychological therapy for adolescents with depression, suicidal ideations and self-harm tendencies at Boston’s Mclean Hospital (Havard Medical School Affiliate). Since then, she started therapy groups for these adolescents and support groups for parents with children who are depressed with self-harm and suicidal ideations.
Kelly was also one of the pioneer members of the Response, Early Intervention and Assessment in Community Mental Health (REACH West) which specializes in providing psychological assessments and evidence-based interventions in schools and in students’ homes. She has worked closely with Singapore schools, special schools and community agencies to help students with mental health issues. Her responsibilities include case management, psychological assessments, as well individual interventions and anxiety management groups for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. She is also trained in the Incredible Years Parenting program and has run groups for parents who have difficulties in managing their children’s behaviors.
Through her years of experience, Kelly has developed her leadership and supervision skills well. She was appointed the deputy team leader of the REACH West team and also provides supervision for the psychologist associates in the team. She has also presented in international conferences on children’s mental health issues in Singapore.
Kelly went on to join private practice with skill builders to continue psychological therapy with children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorders who are facing mental health disorders such as depression or anxiety. This is an area of specialty where is difficult to find the relevant expertise in Singapore.
She also joined Human Dynamics (Singapore) to provide talks for working adults in Singapore. The talks are mainly given to company staff to improve their mental health and broaden their knowledge on maintaining a balance between work and stress. Kelly also sees the working adult facing stress in the office for psychological therapy sessions to help alleviate their stresses.
Kelly has a passion for teaching. She is a registered supervisor with the Singapore Register of Psychologists. She supervises students who are taking the Masters of psychology program by teaching and providing guidance in their practicum experience. She is also an adjunct lecturer of psychology in a polytechnic, teaching students about psychology and practice.
Kelly is also an adjunct faculty member of the National University of Singapore, involved in a nation wide research project on resilience. She had given many talks to Singapore School teachers about helping their students build resilence. She has also co-written a parenting booklet for building resilence in children (which can be found on this website under resources).
She is also a speaker in talks organized by various agencies with issues in relation to mental health, parenting and communication with children, stress management and more.
Currently, she focuses on her private practice with a special interest in helping people with Borderline Personality Disorder, depression and anxiety. She hopes to continue to help people reach their goals and live a life worth living.

Kelly went on radio to talk about self harm in children and adolescents and provided very useful parenting tips on how to communicate with your child who has self harm behaviors.
If you missed the interview, here is a quick summary of what she shared on radio.
How to communicate with your child if you have found out about his or her self harm behaviors
1) Parents need to firstly understand the difficulties that their child is facing and do not assume that they are doing it to get attention
2) when they are in tears, it would not be helpful to keep asking them why are they crying but instead offer support by giving them a hug or even a piece of tissue to dry their tears. Sometimes, they just need someone to sit beside them while they cry for comfort.
3) When they have calmed down, ask if there is anything that you can do to help them with their problems.
4) When they are sharing with you about their problems, listen and do not make any comments. Simply show them empathy by telling them that you understand their difficulties and if there is anything you could do to help.
5) Do not scold your child for self harming. Show them that you care by telling them, “this must be so hard for you”
6) Consider seeking help for long term self harm behaviors from professionals
Kelly went to Boston Mclean Hospital for an attachment for 1 month to get trained using the Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). DBT is known to be effective in helping people with depression, self harm and suicidal behaviors. She has enjoyed her training and this has equipped her with more therapy skills to support those in need.
She also spent the month there interacting and observing the Mclean intervention program for adolescents with borderline personality disorder. Through her time there, she had understood more about the condition and how effective the program was in treating these adolescents.
She hopes to create a similar program here in Singapore
Kelly had taken part in the International Conference for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry during her time in the National University Hospital. She had done research on mental health issues in the schools and presented her findings in the conference.
